A rare release from the Vassaltis cellars. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Vassaltis Vineyards, the estate opened its cellars and released a selection of bottles that had been carefully cellared at the winery since bottling. This Santorini Barrel Aged 2017 – Late Release, made from 100% Assyrtiko, comes from a cuvée that is no longer part of the Vassaltis range. A mature expression of Santorini Assyrtiko, released after almost a decade of evolution and now available in extremely limited quantities. 95+/100 – Greg Sherwood MW. Tasting Notes
In its youth, the 2017 showed a powerful yet remarkably focused expression of Assyrtiko, with citrus peel, crisp green apple, yellow fruit, crushed rock and basalt, complemented by subtle spice and oak-derived notes.
On the palate, concentration was balanced by vibrant acidity and the distinctive saline character associated with great Santorini Assyrtiko. The oak brought texture and depth without overwhelming the fruit or volcanic minerality.
After almost a decade of evolution, each bottle now offers a rare opportunity to experience mature Santorini Assyrtiko.
