Zakynthino

Zakynthino (pronounced Zah-KEEN-thee-no) is a rare white grape variety native to Zakynthos, also grown in Kefalonia and parts of the western Peloponnese. Its name reflects its origins, although it has been cultivated in Kefalonia for over 400 years, introduced by monks from Zakynthos.

This grape variety thrives in southern Kefalonia, where clay soils and south-west exposure, influenced by the Ainos mountain range, create ideal growing conditions. The vines are often cultivated using the traditional goblet system, reflecting the island’s historical winegrowing practices.

Generally producing dry white wines, Zakynthino wines are fresh, rich in acidity, and capable of aging with elegance. While not intensely aromatic, they reveal subtle citrus and floral notes, as well as a distinctive mineral and saline character, reflecting the coastal and island terroirs where the vines thrive.
