Mavrotragano
Mavrotragano (pronounced Mah-vroh-TRA-gah-noh) is a rare red grape variety native to Santorini, covering less than 2% of the island's vineyards, but highly prized for its aromatic complexity and aging potential. Once thought to be lost, it was saved from extinction by dedicated winemakers and growers, and has since made a remarkable comeback.
Its name comes from the Greek Mávro (“black”) and Trágano (“crunchy”), reflecting its thick-skinned, medium-sized berries that produce wines with aromas of ripe red fruit, spice, minerality, and lively, crisp acidity. Mavrotragano wines are structured and elegant, with the ability to age gracefully for over a decade, revealing deeper complexity over time.
