Thessaly
Thessaly, located in central Greece, is a fertile plain surrounded by mountains, offering a diversity of soils and microclimates that favor the production of red and white wines. The combination of altitude, soil types, and temperature variations in the region results in fresh, balanced wines with an expressive local character.

Grape varieties and key styles
Native white grape varieties
Roditis thrives in Thessaly, producing lively, aromatic white wines with floral notes and refreshing acidity. Other local white varieties include Batiki, often blended with Roditis, and Savatiano, particularly in the Anchialos PDO, which produces fresh, well-structured wines.
Native red grape varieties
Xinomavro is grown in certain hilly areas, producing medium-bodied, aromatic red wines with lively acidity and fine tannins. Traditional blends often include Krassato and Stavroto, particularly in PDO areas such as Rapsani. Limniona has recently emerged as one of Greece’s great wine successes, producing deep, flavorful red wines that are structured and expressive of their terroir. Mavro Messenikola, a local variety from the inland hills, adds spicy, aromatic, and well-structured wines, highlighting the diversity of Thessaly’s red wine heritage.
International Grapes
Thessaly also cultivates Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cinsault, Chardonnay, and Muscat of Hamburg, mainly in experimental or niche vineyards. These grapes complement the local wines and offer additional styles without overshadowing the indigenous heritage.
Notable areas
Rapsani
Located on the slopes of Mount Olympus and the surrounding hills, Rapsani produces renowned red blends based on Xinomavro, Krassato, and Stavroto, which are structured, suitable for aging, and expressive of the mountainous terroir.
Nea Anchialos
Near the Pagasetic Gulf, this low-lying coastal area favors fresh white wines with lively aromas, particularly those made from the Roditis grape variety.
Messenikola
The hilly inland areas of southwestern Thessaly, near Lake Plastira, produce red and white wines with a distinct local character, benefiting from cooler nights and fertile soils. The main grape variety grown in this region is Mavro Messenikola, a rare red grape that grows exclusively here. Wines produced under the Messenikola PDO designation must be composed of at least 70% Mavro Messenikola, with the remaining 30% being a blend of Carignan and Syrah. This grape variety brings depth, structure, and aromatic complexity, reflecting the region’s unique terroir and traditional viticulture.
Wine heritage
Thessaly has a long tradition of winemaking, as evidenced by archaeological remains attesting to vine cultivation since ancient times. Although less well known internationally than Macedonia or the Peloponnese, the region offers distinctive wines made from indigenous grape varieties, combining the freshness of the mountains and the influence of the coast. PDOs such as Rapsani guarantee recognition for red blends of the highest quality, while emerging grape varieties such as Limniona and Mavro Messenikola demonstrate Thessaly’s innovation and contribution to Greece’s wine heritage.
