Agiorgitiko
Agiorgitiko (pronounced Ah-yor-YEE-tee-ko), which means “St. George's grape,” is one of Greece's most famous red grape varieties and the hallmark of the Nemea PDO in the Peloponnese. Often described as “multidynamic,” it can produce a remarkable range of styles, from lively rosés and easy-drinking reds to rich, oak-aged wines and succulent sweet versions.
What makes Agiorgitiko so special is its fragrant and velvety character: juicy red fruits, supple tannins, and a round, accessible texture that make it both popular and versatile at the table. In higher-altitude vineyards, the grape shows more freshness and structure, giving it depth and aging potential.
Today, Agiorgitiko is grown not only in Nemea but throughout Greece, often blended for added complexity while retaining its characteristic charm. Known as the “blood of Hercules” in local legend, it remains a true symbol of Greece's wine-growing heritage.
