Monemvassia
Monemvassia (pronounced Mo-nehm-va-SEE-ah) is a remarkably versatile white grape variety, mainly grown on Paros. It is used to make three types of PDO wines: white and red Paros, and sweet Monemvasia-Malvasia.
The vine is vigorous and hardy, ripening early and thriving at higher, cooler altitudes. The wines have moderate aromas with subtle spicy notes, while the sweet wines made from sun-dried grapes are rich, concentrated, and suitable for aging. Traditionally grown on stone terraces, Monemvassia combines historical practice with expressive and flavorful wines. Contrary to previous belief, it is not related to Malvasia grape varieties, despite historical confusion.
