Vertzami is the signature red grape of Lefkada and one of the most distinctive varieties of the Ionian Islands. Ancient and rare, it has long been part of the island’s winemaking heritage and is known for producing deeply coloured, structured wines with strong identity.

Grown on rocky, calcareous soils exposed to sea winds, Vertzami develops thick skins and firm tannins. It typically shows aromas of dark berries, Mediterranean herbs, spice and earthy notes. Despite its intensity, the grape retains vibrant acidity, allowing for both freshness and ageing potential.

Depending on the winemaking approach, Vertzami can produce powerful, age-worthy reds as well as lighter, more delicate pale reds or rosé-like styles. In all its expressions, it remains a grape of depth, authenticity and strong sense of place.
