Mandilaria
Mandilaria (pronounced Man-dee-LA-ree-ah) is a robust red grape variety native to the southern Aegean islands, prized for its intense color and firm tannins. Its name probably comes from the Greek word mandíli (“handkerchief”), referring to the traditional practice of tying the harvested bunches into bundles. Locally, it is also called Vaftra, referring to the deep purple stains left on the hands during the harvest, evidence of its rich pigmentation and island heritage.
Historically prized for the legendary Ariousios wine of Chios, Mandilaria is now a key component of PDO Paros, producing structured, age-worthy red wines, as well as blends, rosés, and dessert wines. Its bold tannins and distinctive character give the wines personality, depth, and longevity.
