Syrah
Syrah, although originally from the Rhône Valley in France, has a longer history in Greece than many people realize. Today, it is widely cultivated in northern Greece, the Peloponnese, and Thessaly, where it plays an important role in the Messenicolas PDO. Syrah thrives in hot, sunny regions, while benefiting from the cooling influence of altitude and sea breezes. As a blending grape, it is remarkably versatile: when paired with Xinomavro, it adds fruit, body, and spice; when paired with Kotsifali, it adds structure and depth. As a single varietal, Greek Syrah produces expressive wines with aromas of black fruit, peppery spices, and typically Mediterranean herbaceous notes.
