Koniariko
Koniariko (also known as Koniaros) is an extremely rare indigenous red grape variety from northern Greece. Its name originates from the ancient city of Iconium (now Konya, in Turkey), but it has been cultivated for over a century in the Serres region, where a handful of passionate winemakers have ensured its preservation.
This grape variety produces deep, elegant red wines characterized by beautiful concentration, balanced natural acidity, and silky tannins. Its aromatic profile reveals ripe black and red fruits, accompanied by notes of spices, pepper, cinnamon, and Mediterranean herbs. Thanks to its structure, Koniariko has excellent aging potential and develops remarkable complexity over time.
Long considered a hidden gem, Koniariko is now experiencing a true renaissance thanks to a few visionary wineries, such as Oenops Wines, which showcase the full personality of this historic grape variety. Produced in very small quantities, wines made from Koniariko are now among the rarest and most authentic expressions of Greek viticulture.
