Serifos

Serifos, a hidden gem of the Cyclades, is quietly reclaiming its place in the Aegean’s ancient winemaking tradition.

This sun-drenched island, known for its raw natural beauty and rugged terrain, was once part of the vibrant wine trade that flourished throughout the Cyclades in Antiquity. Though less renowned than neighboring islands like Santorini or Paros, Serifos is experiencing a quiet viticultural revival, where small-scale producers are rediscovering the island’s potential for quality wine production.

The island’s mountainous landscape, mineral-rich soils, and exposure to the Aegean winds create a distinctive microclimate that favors the cultivation of resilient grape varieties. Traditional terraced vineyards, some recently restored, dot the hillsides – a testament to the island’s agrarian past.

Today, winemakers on Serifos are focusing on organic and low-intervention practices, working with indigenous Greek varieties such as Assyrtiko, Monemvassia, and Mandilaria. The resulting wines are expressive and honest, often reflecting the untamed character of the island: saline, structured, and full of personality.

While still under the radar, Serifos offers a compelling glimpse into the new wave of Cycladic winemaking – where heritage, terroir, and innovation meet in a bottle.
