Cyclades

The Cyclades, a sun-soaked archipelago in the heart of the Aegean Sea, boasts a long and rich history of winemaking. These islands were central to the ancient Aegean wine trade, with their wines sought after throughout Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Today, the Cyclades are undergoing a viticultural renaissance, embracing modern techniques while preserving their traditional practices.

Among the Cyclades, several islands, including Paros, Naxos, and Santorini, have gained recognition for their unique terroirs and indigenous grape varieties. The islands’ volcanic soils, combined with the intense sunlight and the cooling influence of the Aegean winds, create ideal conditions for the cultivation of high-quality grapes.

Cycladic wines are known for their distinct character and balance, often reflecting the rugged beauty of the islands themselves. The region is home to a variety of grapes, such as the white Assyrtiko, Aidani, and Monemvassia, as well as the red Mandilaria and Mavrotragano.

PDO wines from the Cyclades, such as those from Paros and Santorini, have gained international acclaim, offering a taste of the archipelago’s unique viticultural heritage. The region continues to evolve, with winemakers focusing on organic farming, small yields, and the rediscovery of lesser-known indigenous varieties, ensuring that Cycladic wines maintain their place on the global stage.
